Dance
At Mattoon Academy we do combination classes with a variety of dance styles.
Combo I & II
Is designed for the beginning dancer ages 3 & 4. There is an emphasis on body awareness, musical rhythm, imagination, and basic coordination. Combo I & II classes focus on teaching young children the basic elements of ballet & tap dance. Some ballet and basic jazz moves will be taught along with plenty of wiggles and giggles. The ballet barre is used sparingly in Combo I & II classes. Weekly novelty routines are incorporated into the classes. Students will learn a tap and novelty routine that will be performed in the spring recital. Students will need pink ballet shoes and black tap shoes.

Available classes:
Ballet
Both classical and contemporary ballet styles are used to develop technique, balance, and control. Barre work will be incorporated in each class beginning at the 5 & 6 year old classes. Throughout the year, students will work on a ballet, lyrical or a contemporary routine that will be performed at the spring recital. Students will need pink ballet shoes.

Available classes:
Tap
Students will work exclusively on tap technique focusing on coordination and rhythm. They will learn new steps by doing stationary work at the barre and by working on across the floor drills. Throughout the year, students will work on a tap routine that will be performed at the spring recital. Students will need black tap shoes.

Available classes:
Jazz
Students will learn both contemporary and classical jazz styles with a ballet foundation. They will work on jazz technique as well as isolations, leaps, turns, and flexibility. These are elements that will make their dance more interesting and impressive. Jazz combos will be taught weekly. Throughout the year, students will work on a jazz routine that will be performed at the spring recital. Students may use their pink ballet shoes during class but may be asked to order jazz shoes when the costume for the show has been determined.
For students to learn pom routines, they need to work on jazz skills.

Hip Hop
This is one of our most popular classes. It is a high energy class where students are introduced to hip hop moves and learn the latest trends in street dance set to funky music. Throughout the year, students will work on a hip hop routine that will be performed at the spring recital. Students may use tennis shoes or jazz shoes during class but will be asked to order a specific hip hop sneaker when the costume for the show has been determined.

Pom
This class concentrates on preparing students for local school dance team tryouts. Motions, jumps, spins, leaps and some stunt building will be incorporated in this class. Throughout the year, students will work on a pom routine that will be performed at the spring recital. Poms are provided by the studio. Students may use tennis shoes or jazz shoes during class but will be asked to order a specific sneaker or jazz shoe when the costume for the show has been determined.
For students to learn pom routines, they need to work on jazz skills.

Shows & Recitals
Spring Recital: The dance recital is held annually in the spring at the Lake Land College Theater. Students will learn routines during their class and perform the routines at the annual recital. Each student who wishes to perform in the show will need to purchase a costume.
